Judgmentalism and a Deeper Life

Judgmentalism is very frequently a survival strategy. Beneath it perhaps an anger that one is not in control. Beneath that a sadness and grief that can open us to receive from God rather than demand from others.

Do you find yourself in a place of judgement with others? Jesus suggested that we remove the log from our own eye before trying to take the splinter out of another’s eye.

If you find yourself judging (i.e., saying “if only those people would …” or “how can they think those things?”), it is not a sign of righteousness but an invitation to look deeper.

Are you angry? Are there things you have lost that you are grieving? Can you let them go?

Take a few moments and search your heart, with God, and watch your heart melt into His.

  1. This has been a big area of struggle. I am amazed at the level of passion I feel around current issues. I want to love well, so sometimes I have stopped reading a particular person’s Facebook posts because knowing what they are saying has made it difficult. I have sought for a long time to understand how others see things, and have not thought I was judgmental. I’m also experiencing judgment towards me, and have thought “Is this about being judged with the measure one judges?” Hard to discern, because I think I do have both in me – compassion and openness, and a stronger judgment than I realized. Trying to learn better how to love well even when I disagree, and how to respond when another judges me harshly.

    • Kathy – thank you for sharing all of that. It feels like the most important thing when we are experiencing what feels like being judgmental or a lack of compassion is to go to prayer. “Search me O God.” I wrote this post for me more than anyone else – I can relate. I want His heart for people and the world – not my perspective which is limited and obscured at times.
