Trusting God in the Wilderness: a Daily Lenten Devotional
As we journey through life, we often find ourselves in a desert kind of place. A place that feels desolate, lonely, harsh, and perhaps unfamiliar. And we might even feel the compulsion to escape and run to more familiar landscape. However, we are invited to resist that temptation for it is in those dry, desolate, lonely places that the Father does some of His best work. It is in those places where our souls become dry and thirsty that we unwilling to settle for clichés and easy answers. The stripping and unmasking of the desert are so good for our souls. If we desire God, the wilderness is where transformation occurs.
The 40 days of the Lenten Season is an invitation to journey like Jesus did in His 40 days of temptation in the wilderness. In many ways, Jesus’ wilderness time was a redemptive “redo” of the 40 years that the people of Israel spent in the wilderness. He faithfully endured temptation, danger, and fasting to model something for us. He was giving us an example of how to faithfully navigate the vicissitudes of life. In Lent, as we engage in a fast or discipline of some kind, we are following “in His steps.” (1 Peter 2:21)

In Welcome Everything, Ted serves as a guide through some of the spiritual contours of a journey through cancer. The story of his battle with both Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Hodgkins Lymphoma is detailed through sharing excerpts from a blog written during two and half years of treatments, surgeries, relapses, a transplant, and a whole host of side effects. Addressing issues that are experienced in a cancer journey as well as any kind of suffering, a hope and an identity securely tied in Christ are themes that run through these pages. Included are chapters of current reflections, looking back at the terrain traversed in these tumultuous years. Not a self-help book or a guide to cancer, this book is a look at what it means to welcome everything, including cancer, as a teacher that can bring more into one’s life than could ever be imagined.
Order on Amazon, here. Also, available as a Kindle e-book.
What people are saying …
“Reflections on My Journey with Cancer is more than a cancer book, it is a treasure of reflections that helps us all learn what it means to Welcome Everything. As Dr. Ted Wueste engages the idea of welcoming everything, he artfully gives us a peek into his own cancer journey to explore what it means to accept those things we cannot change. Without offering prescriptions, Dr. Wueste, invites us into his experience, the good and the bad, offering keen insights and applications for all who are hurting and experiencing a loss of control in their lives. This book can be read and studied to understand central themes of the Christian life (Is God doing this to me? What does it mean to trust God?), but undoubtedly it will serve as a devotional for many who are struggling through difficult times. Timely, and critically important to our own spiritual development, I strongly recommend that you explore what it means to Welcome Everything.” Doug Kelley, PhD

Ted, Yes, I have been so blessed by the blogs specific to your health/Cancer Diagnosis. Are they available yet for printing? And, Yes! I am excited to have some of the Advent Books in my Amazon Cart for Christmas gifts. Though we have not personally met, I feel as if I know you and your family through several connections: John, Christy Fonvielle. More specifically through the entries your family made through the years in the Fonvielle Perdido Beach “Thank You” journal. Such sweet words, drawings by the kids many years back. So, we have prayed for you as though you’re an extension of the Fonvielle Family. Secondly, your precious mom and I had the pleasure of knowing one another for the last 6 months of her life here on earth. So, I’ve prayed for you as Cheryl’s son. Finally, I had a Traumatic Brain Injury in 2017 and was in Out Patient Brain Rehab for more than a year. Into the second year, your pop and I shared the same cognitive speech pathologist at Harris Hospital downtown.
But, it is through the posts that Christy started forwarding from your blogs that your transparency spoke such clarity about who you are. Continuing to pray that you tolerate the meds that will slow down the pneumonia and can breathe easily. May you feel so well loved by the One who calls you “Beloved.”
Grace and peace,
Deb Debra Sewell email@example.com
Deb, thanks for giving the context. I knew your name was familiar. I’m so glad you knew my mom in the last months of her life. And, yes, we feel like a part of the Fonvielle family. Of course you can download any of the writings and print them out if you’d like. I’m glad that they’ve ministered to you. I look forward to staying in touch.
Deb – I just finished a book that includes all my blogs from my journey with cancer as well as some chapters of current reflections on the experience. See above and you can find the book on Amazon starting this week.
